Overview of the Sergeant and Lieutenant Study Courses

Study courses for HCSO Deputies and Sergeants wishing to promote to a higher rank are being offered this spring/summer for 10 weeks. The courses, which have been taught on three previous occasions and include at least 30 hours of instruction, are comprised of the following:

  • Study and test taking skills
  • Handouts and outlines
  • Mock exams (usually 2 per session)
  • Assignment and monitoring of study groups
  • Sergeant Course (review of the Civil Service Regulations, Policy & Ethics Manual, and textbook)
  • Lieutenant Course (review of the Policy & Ethics Manual and the two textbooks)

Overview of the Mock Oral Board

A separate Mock Oral Board, which has been given on one previous occasion, is comprised of the following:

  • Students will attend one class to ready themselves for the Mock Oral Board
  • Students will participate in a mock oral board
  • Interviews will be conducted by reviewers who have previously graded HCSO Oral Boards
  • Reviewers will score the interview and provide assessments to participants
  • A video recording of the actual interview will be provided to each student

Competitive Process

The promotional process is highly competitive. A greater score on either the test or oral board is often the difference between those who do and do not promote. The program will assist students by:

  • Motivating and challenging the student
  • Offering structured study time
  • Condensing the study material
  • Increasing study, test taking, and oral board skills through instruction and repetition
  • Offering physical environments which mirror the stress level of the promotional process

Invaluable Information

The most important thing to remember concerning the promotional process is that students need three things to succeed:

  • Desire
  • Time
  • Organization

Benefits of attending a Study Course and the Mock Oral Board

By attending a Study Course and the Mock Oral Board, students will gain the skills and confidence needed to master the process and thereby achieve better results than they would on their own. Maximize your performance and better your career with the HCSO, sign-up now!
